After 1.7 billion miles Juno nails its Jupiter orbit to within tens of miles

NASA

The Juno spacecraft safely reached orbit at Jupiter on the night of July 4th. It took a lot of work to reach that point, and this gallery highlights final assembly and testing in 2010 and 2011 of the vehicle at Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Denver.

Traveling at a speed of 165,000mph toward a swirling gas giant Monday night, the Juno spacecraft would have no second chances. Had its Leros 1b engine burned too long, Jupiter would have swallowed Juno into its gaseous maw. If the British-made engine burned too short, the spacecraft would have zipped onward into space, lost into the inky blackness forever. But Juno needed no second chance late on the night of July 4th as its hardy little engine fired for a total of 2,102 seconds, perfect to within one second, inserting the spacecraft neatly into orbit around Jupiter.

More flour recalled as the FDA doubles down on cookie dough warning

(credit: Robert S. Donovan)

If you’re a kid, few things are better than homemade cookies. Unlike store-bought sweets, you get to gobble up any bits of cookie dough stuck to the bowl and beaters, which can be more exciting than the cookies themselves.

Of course, most adults know you’re not supposed to eat raw dough because the raw eggs in it may contain Salmonella. But now there’s something else to worry about: E. coli in the flour.

On May 31, General Mills recalled 10 million pounds of flour, sold under three brands after an investigation linked the grain to an outbreak of E. coliO121 (you can see the recall information here). On Friday, the company expanded the recall as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tallied new cases. So far, the tainted flour has sickened 42 and sent 11 to the hospital. Although many strains of E. coli are harmless, the O121 serotype can lead to symptoms that typically include abdominal pain and diarrhea, often bloody. This E. coli can also even cause severe illness that leads to kidney failure. Young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are the most at risk of these severe cases.

Obama Giving Away $37.5 billion In MILITARY AID To Israel, Question is WHY ?

LARGEST MILITARY AID PACKAGE EVER OFFERED TO A FOREIGN COUNTRY IN US HISTORY JUST GOT BIGGER

(ANTIWAR) Already set to be the “largest military aid package” the US has ever offered to a single country in history, the Obama Administration has written a lengthy letter to US Senators today, informing them of intentions to “substantially sweeten” the already record offer in an attempt to try to get the Israelis to sign on the dotted line.

A $30 billion, 10-year aid package is due to expire, and the new package has been rumored to be in the realm of $37.5 billion, with talk it might go to as high as $40 billion as the Netanyahu government continues to resist signing it.

The latest push comes just a week after Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump’s top Israel adviser urged Israel to refuse any deal with Obama, promising much more if Trump is elected. Several Israeli officials have warned such a move could significantly shift US-Israel relations, making them a partisan issue.

Few details are clear about the new letter’s offer, though unchanged is the administration’s effort to ensure that Israel spends a larger percentage of the military aid on US-made weapons. Under the present deal, Israel is allowed to spend about 25% of the aid elsewhere, both on fuel and on funding their own programs.

While all indications are that funding for Israeli missile defense schemes will be baked into this new pact, the overall percentage allowed to be spent abroad is expected to drop significantly, which makes this as much a US subsidy for its well-connected arms makers as it is an aid package for Israel.

3D Touch screen on iPhone 6S is a great example of what’s wrong with 3D Touch

Ever since it introduced a pressure-sensitive 3D Touch screen on the iPhone 6S, Apple has been asking developers to adopt a new system of Quick Actions to surface shortcuts to functions within apps on the home screen. Give a compatible app’s icon a hard press and you’ll be presented with a set of the most commonly used options to help accelerate whatever you want to do. It’s great in theory, but we’re now close to a year into this endeavor and the results have so far been underwhelming.

Sonos is one of the late arrivals, having joined the 3D Touch party with version 6.3 of its iOS Controller app last month, but it’s only serving to illustrate the limitations of the system. The new Sonos app can now be 3D Touched to reveal three handy…

BMW – Cars with Feeling

BMW’s 1939 Mille Miglia Touring Coupé reminds us that cars should be designed with feeling

When McLaren inaugurated its present range of roadgoing supercars with the MP4-12C in 2010, it presented that car as the ultimate expression of form following function. Designed entirely for performance, the 12C was shaped by the wind tunnel and McLaren was proud of that fact. I’m here to state the obvious by denouncing that extremist
